Every once in a while you come across a bit of engineering that makes so much sense you wonder why there isn’t more buzz about it. The onboard baseboard managment controller (BMC) , lightpath diagnostics, and Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) featured on IBM’s line of xServer and BladeCenter systems is a great example and makes the job of managing an HPC cluster just that much easier.

A few weeks ago I picked up an Acer Aspire One netbook at Office Depot for $299 and I’ve been quite impressed with the little guy. I was expecting a toy and was pleasantly surprised at how well it handles typical tasks such as wireless internet browsing, editing Office docs, etc. Basic specs on this Acer are similar to other netbooks (such as the Asus EeePC and MSI Wind) and include:
- Intel Atom with 1.6GHz CPU
- 8.9″ LCD screen with 1024×600 resolution
- 160 GB hard drive
- 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM
- Windows XP Home Edition
- Built-in 802.11 b/g wireless, webcam, and card readers
I’ll be writing more in the future about customizations I’ve done to my Aspire One including setting it up for triple boot (go Linux).

For some crazy Aspire One hardware mods, including adding 3G functionality, check out tnkgrl’s blog.

I just recieved my second annual domain renewal notice for this website and I realized that all I have to show for the past two years is a folder full of e-mails and 289 spambot messages that attempted to post to my vacuous blog. As interesting as a spam blog may be, luckily they were all trapped awaiting moderation by an absentee administrator. Makes you wonder what the blogosphere might look like post-apocolypse, frozen in a moment of time with no new content, except for perhaps some random nonsensical conversations generated by scripts trawling the very bottom of the trenches of the Internet.
Anyway, the point is that I need to start using this resource so expect more chatter here soon, interesting or otherwise.
